Six Words You Should Say – revisited

recital kaleb playingA couple years ago I blogged about “Six Words You Should Say” and I thought that it would be a great blog and article to revisit today.  We are in the ninth week of lessons and you probably have has some push back here and there concerning practicing.  As a parent of three children who are all in various stages of their musical journey I still will get caught up in making sure they have the right posture, play the right notes, play with the proper technique and touch, and the list goes on.  I also see that the more I talk to my kids about what they need to improve the more discouraged that they will end up getting.

Each one of my children has wanted to quit taking lessons at one point, but we’ve pushed on and I’m proud of where each of them are today.  And – I am constantly reminding myself to notice the good in what they’ve done – when they have the right posture, when they play the phrase just as it’s written and to make sure that I let them know I noticed this.  And to say those six words and watch their face . . . .  “I love to watch you play.”

Check out my past blog entry and the article that is linked to it.  It’s a great reminder for us parents.
